Europe’s Fly Ash Gap – A Challenge and an Opportunity

As Europe phases out coal, the supply of fly ash has collapsed — from over 60 million tons in 2010 to less than half that today (ECOBA). The European Cement Association (CEMBUREAU) warns that availability will continue to decline as coal power is retired across the EU. This growing fly-ash gap threatens supply stability and highlights the need for European-made, low-carbon alternatives.
At ICELITH we are developing synthetic minerals that upcycle industrial by-products into reactive pozzolans using clean geothermal and hydropower. The goal is a scalable, circular, and climate-positive solution for Europe’s construction sector.
Replace declining fly ash with a European alternative
Upcycle local residues into CO₂-neutral binders
Strengthen circular value chains
We welcome both the #FlyAshGap and the rise of renewable energy—they mark a rare opportunity to rethink how Europe builds for a low-carbon future.
